DAVAO CITY, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte was caught on camera punching a sheriff of the Davao Regional Trial Court Branch 15 who was serving a demolition order Friday.

Initial reports said Duterte had asked the court for a 2-hour extension to allow residents of Barangay Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. Suliman, Agdao to leave the demolition site, but her request was ignored.

This prompted Duterte to go to the demolition site and confront the demolition team. The team said sheriff Abe Andres gave the go signal for the demolition.

ABS-CBN footage showed Duterte gesturing to Andres to come closer before punching him repeatedly in the face. Andres suffered contusions above his eye and underwent treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.

Duterte later said demolition teams and residents should not have met in the area.

The demolition caused tension after some residents tried to fight the demolition teams.  Some 500 families living in 217 houses are affected by the demolition.

In an interview, Andres said Duterte's attack left him with bruises above his eye.

"Merong contusions kaunti sa ibabaw ng aking mata pero ok naman ho. May reseta," he said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel.

The sheriff said he did not expect to be attacked by the mayor since he was only doing his job.

He added that a lawyer approached him at the hospital and said the mayor was offering her apology.

"Hindi ko alam kung galing yun sa kanya. Kung ano naman hindi naman namin sabihing ok na lang din pero yung sorry na yun kung hindi galing sa kanya wala akong magagawa," he said.

Andres said he will report the matter to his superiors as well as the Sheriffs Confederation of the Philippines before taking any action.
